Key Stage 2
At Redcourt, Key Stage 2 includes children in Preps 3 to 6. Working with parents, we seek to identify and nurture our pupils’ potential and provide opportunities to develop their confidence and a wide range of skills. This good liaison is fundamental to our approach.
We continue to foster a love of learning, through a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes many exciting trips and in house events, organised by our dedicated staff.
From Prep 3, the form teacher helps the children to learn how to work more independently, to apply the knowledge and skills already acquired. The core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science are taught thoroughly to provide a secure grounding. Children benefit from French, Music and PE being taught by specialist staff.
Each year we send our pupils to local Grammar Schools via the 11+ and Entrance Examination system. Our success rate is very high. We are especially proud of our results as we have a non-selective intake throughout the school from FS1. Our children begin working on their Verbal Reasoning skills from Prep 3. However, more formal preparations for Entrance Exams and the 11+ begin in Prep 5. Specialist VR, Mathematics, English and Non-VR teaching is given to ensure all children have the best chance of success. Prep 5 children attend Saturday Morning School as a part of this provision. The Headmistress and form teachers ensure full support and guidance is given to all pupils and parents.
We expect our juniors to flourish as much outside the classroom as inside it. Team work, social skills, resilience and confidence all develop quickly, especially through involvement in a whole host of Sports and Games. The children have the opportunity to develop skills in Hockey, Rounders, Netball, Rugby, Gymnastics, Athletics, Swimming, Football and Cross Country.
We also encourage all children to participate in a host of enrichment activities. There is a diversity of clubs ranging from improving their sporting, computing, creative and musical skills. There is also the opportunity to learn an instrument from our varied peripatetic music staff. Children are frequently able to represent Redcourt, via competitions, in the fields they excel at.
In Prep 4 and 6, children have the opportunity to go on a residential trip. Prep 4 pupils travel to Kingswood in Staffordshire, an outdoor education and adventure centre, for 3 days. Prep 6 have regularly visited France for 5 days. This hugely popular excursion draws on the knowledge acquired from the French lessons that began in FS1. They also visited Germany and Dearne Valley too.
Our children thrive spiritually, emotionally, academically and physically, supported by the values of Edmund Rice. The well-being and understanding of each individual child is key to our success; valuing enthusiasm, tolerance, respect and compassion.
