Please give very careful thought to bringing your child to school if you feel that they may be unwell during the day.

Measles

February 2012
Dear Parent
Measles
There have been a small number of measles cases in Merseyside in recent weeks. Please ensure your child is up to date with their vaccinations to protect them.

MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps and rubella. The first MMR is given to children at around 13 months old. The second MMR can be given once the child is 3 years and 4 months old. It is best given before the child starts school but can be given at any age. Both doses of MMR vaccine are needed to protect against measles.  If you are not sure whether your child has been vaccinated, you can check with your GP practice.

The first signs of measles are:

  • a cold (runny nose, watery eyes, swollen eyelids and sneezing)
  • red eyes and sensitivity to light
  • fever
  • greyish white spots in the mouth and throat

After a few days a red-brown spotty rash will appear. It usually starts behind the ears, then spreads around the head and neck before spreading to the legs and the rest of the body.

If you would like more information about measles and MMR, see: http://www.nhs.uk/

You should ring your GP if your child develops symptoms of measles.

It is important that you ring your GP rather than turn up at the surgery or walk-in centre or A&E if you suspect measles. This is because measles is very infectious and your doctor may want to make special arrangements for your child to be seen. Your child should not be at school/nursery.

Yours sincerely

Proposed re-scheduling of 11+
Wirral Council is asking parents and schools for their views on changes to the timing of the grammar school selection tests. The new national Admissions Code says that parents must have their child’s selection test results before the end of October.

In May Year 5 parents would be asked to say if they want their child to be tested for entry to grammar school. The practice and real tests would take place in September of Year 6 so that parents can have the test results by mid-October.The number and style of the tests will not change.

The first year group to be tested under the amended scheme would be children currently in Year 5. To find out more, go to

www.wirral.gov.schooladmissions

and look under “Consultation on School Admission Arrangements 2013/2014”, or ask at the school office for a parent’s leaflet.

Prep 3 go back to Ancient Rome

As part of our history topic this term, Prep 3 have been finding out about the Roman way of life. Yesterday, we were lucky enough to have a visit in school from a brave Roman soldier named Guyus! He wore armour that was made from thick metal that weighed a tonne! He told us that this is exactly the type of clothes that Romans soldiers used to wear! Guyus told us lots of stories about life as a roman auxiliary soldier, showed us weapons used in battle and taught us how to defend ourselves against the enemy. Prep 3 had a wonderful day and were very grateful to Guyus for his time.

What we learnt from the Roman Soldier…

Dominic J: ‘Soap is useless’

Will C: ‘I found it quite strange that there used to be benches in the Roman baths, and that people could buy food and drink in there!’

Brad A: ‘Romans NEVER give up!’

Mariachiara P: ‘Romans were really clever’

Ellie P: ‘It was interesting to find out that the soldier used oil on his hands to clean them, the dirt that he scraped off was horrible!’

Guy P: ‘The ladies and gentlemen didn’t go into the baths at the same time’

Daniel C: ‘Romans used to have to walk 18miles a day carrying an extremely heavy load on their back’
