Please give very careful thought to bringing your child to school if you feel that they may be unwell during the day. |
| Proposed re-scheduling of 11+ |
Wirral Council is asking parents and schools for their views on changes to the timing of the grammar school selection tests. The new national Admissions Code says that parents must have their child’s selection test results before the end of October.
In May Year 5 parents would be asked to say if they want their child to be tested for entry to grammar school. The practice and real tests would take place in September of Year 6 so that parents can have the test results by mid-October.The number and style of the tests will not change.
The first year group to be tested under the amended scheme would be children currently in Year 5. To find out more, go to
www.wirral.gov.schooladmissions
and look under “Consultation on School Admission Arrangements 2013/2014”, or ask at the school office for a parent’s leaflet.
You can e-mail
secondaryplaces@wirral.gov.uk
with your views or write to Mainstream Admissions, CYPD, Hamilton Building, Conway Street, Birkenhead, CH41 1FD by 1st March 2012.

The Potting Shed |
On 7th March, the Potting Shed came to help us make clay containers. They brought in loads of materials for us. We had big chunks of clay in cling film. We then made a small pot to put water in called slip. It was a type of glue. Then we split up into 2 groups. Holly and Jeanette showed us how to make a small pot and we made a larger one in some cases (a lot larger!). We grabbed a handful of clay and rolled it into a sausage then we curled it and did another one, and some people even did another one!. We then had to roll yet another sausage shape but this time it went on top and around the side. After doing a few more, we were ready for the lid and decoration, if we wanted. We had a brilliant time and can’t wait to visit the Potting Shed to paint our pots! By Daniel Light and Connie Ngo |

REDCOURT'S ROLY POLYS |
On Friday 11th February 2011, Prep 1 held their Roly Poly Derby. We had spent weeks planning, designing and making our Roly Poly’s ready for our derby. There were fast roly poly’s, slow ones, colourful ones and even those which seemed to fly through the air!! We had a lot of fun making them and Prep 1 continued to play with them at home.
Well done Prep 1 – you are all wonderful Design Technologists.

MATTHEW'S CELEBRATION CAKE |
The ‘galette des rois’, is a traditional French cake made to celebrate the epiphany in France. It is made of almonds, sugar, butter, eggs and all encased in pastry and then baked. I have made several cakes so far and they were all a success.
In France a bean or coin would usually be placed in the cake and the person with it in their slice would be king or queen for the day. I put a nut in mine and it dissolved!! But the cake was still very tasty and I will definitely be making another one(s) next year!

ROMANS ARRIVE AT REDCOURT |
"We had a visit from a Roman soldier in my school. He came to tell us about the Romans who lived in Britain more than 2000 years ago. He was dressed as a Roman Soldier and he was wearing a red tunic under his metal armour. He had a belt round his
middle which had a small sword and a big sword. He had a metal helmet on his head to protect his head, ears and nose when in battle. On his feet he wore gladiator sandals which were made of leather straps. He carried an oblong shield which was curved to
protect his body. The shield could be used as a weapon.
He taught us some Latin words like:
Sword is gladius
Cloak is sagum
Shield is scutum
We went into the hall where we were taught to
march like Roman soldiers. We were throwing
pretend weapons at each other but we were
hitting the shields - it was fun."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Today a Roman Solider came to our class. First he spoke in Latin and we all didn’t understand him.
He asked us questions in Latin and we all started laughing. The Roman was wearing some body armour he brought a scutum (shield) and gladius (sword). He told us most about the Romans and their houses. He drew a picture of a Roman house and told us that a slave would light a fire underneath the house and warm air would fill gaps in the house to provide central heating. He also told us about Queen Boudicca and that she killed herself when she saw all the dead children in the battle so she decided to poison herself.
The Roman then got Corbyn up to get him into armour. First he
put on clothes. Then he put some wool over the clothes and finally he put on
the body armour. Last of all he put on the Cassis (in English it is helmet). We did lots of quizzes. At the end we went to the Hall to use the shields (in Latin it is Scutum). First we did marching holding the shields. Then we had to make a turtle shape with the shields. At the end we did the turtle race. All you had to do is get a time and see how long it would take to get into the shield and walk to the end. On the first one we lost 55 to 110. On the second one we won 27 to 35. The girls beat the boys 14 - 7. We said good bye to the soldier, he took off his armour and we were able to hold it.
It was the BEST day ever!!"
PREP 5's ROOMS |
In September, Prep 5J & 5C made shoebox rooms. It could be any room that your wanted. I chose to make a bedroom. When they were all done, we had an exhibition to show the rest of the school what we had made. They were all numbered so everyone could vote. On the day of the voting we also had a cake sale. The children could then have a cake or a biscuit and drink. A week later at the awards assembly, we all got a certificate for our shoe box rooms. Mr Arnold then announced the winner. Francesca Revans got 1st place and Kit Wilkinson got 2nd place. It was really good fun and all the left over cakes went down to the staff room.
OUR NURSERY TRIP! |
On Monday 11th October, 20 Nursery children went to visit Birkenhead Park. It was 1.30pm, and the sunshine was glorious. Mr Arnold very kindly drove the minibus.
We followed Paul and Hugh, the Park Rangers, on an ‘animal habitat’ trail through the park. As ‘The Owl Babies’ story had been our focus this term, our aim was to see where owls live. The Rangers told us how Owls digest their food, and they allowed us to feed the ducks with special duck food, available from the Visitor Centre.
Many thanks to the Nursery Team, Mrs McHugh, and Mr Arnold for making our trip possible and to the children for behaving so well. What a super day!!
| Harvest Assembly |
Today (30th September) 5C and Mrs Carrington did a Harvest Festival Assembly. 5C talked a lot about water and how precious it is to us and how lucky and grateful we are to have enough for our country. Mrs Carrington started the assembly with the sign of the cross, and we all sang ‘All Things Bright And Beautiful’. Then some children read out some information about the harvest and The Charles Thompson Hall/Mission. The Charles Thompson Hall is a building in the middle of Birkenhead which he built himself, where people that don’t have a home or money to buy food can go there to have a meal. When Charles Thompson died his daughter took over the organisation and got awarded a medal by Queen Elizabeth. After that, some children read out facts about water one of them included ‘a tomato is 95% water’, and then some children read prayers. Mrs Carrington then put on a slideshow all about fish. Finally, we sung ‘A Sea Santee’ and Corin played her recorder and some other girls played the xylophone. It was a brilliant assembly!
Well done Prep 5C!
| Letter of Thanks From The Charles Thompson’s Mission |
"Dear Friends
I am writing on behalf of Charles Thompson’s Mission, to say a big thank you for your wonderful harvest donation.
These harvest gifts are very much appreciated, and are such a help to us as we give out some 25,000 meals to those in need each year.
We have been so busy feeding people that for the first time we have nearly run out of food for this year. But again we look to God to continue His provision for the work here in Birkenhead through those such as yourselves.
So all your gifts mean so much to us, and more especially those in need who visit our premises on a daily basis.
May God continue to bless you.
Yours most sincerely
Pastor Rob Jeffs
| The Life Caravan |
On September 20th - 23rd, The Life Caravan came to visit our school. The lady in charge was called Carol, and she told us all about drug awareness, our body, making the right choices, how to protect our body and friendship. In turn each class went into The Life Caravan and had a lesson with Carol, the Year 6's first got shown a quiz show about are body. Most of the classes did some activites on the wall of the Caravan there were about ten different phrases on cards, stuck on the wall. We had the one we thought was most important in the middle of the circle. After that, we were split into groups of three or four and were given some cards with some clues on, leading to a substance that can cause harm to the human body. The substances were nicotine, caffeine, tobacco, sugar and alcohol. Most of the groups came out with the same substance, the last activity was watching a video about making the right choice about alcohol.
We all very much enjoyed our trip to the life caravan!!!
ROAD SAFETY AT REDCOURT |
On Monday 4th October the Road Safety Team came to talk to Prep 6 about road safety and its importance. First, the girls went in and talked about walking and taking the bus to school, most of us said we’d take the bus to our seconondary schools and every few said they would get a lift to school. We did a work sheet and drew a map the safest route to get to school - we did it in pairs. We then talked about how to act when on a bus with other children messing around most of us said it would be very dangerous to mess around on the top deck of a bus because if the bus stopped suddenly you could fall down the stairs and injure yourself badly. After that we discussed what you could do to stop being involved in messing around. Lots of people said to move down to the lower deck so you do not get into trouble. The final thing that we talked about is what we do when we get off the bus. The majority of us all said to look for the best place to cross the road and never ever stand between a bus and a car because there have been a few incidents with Year 7’s trying to cross the road and being knocked over. Next the two ladies demonstrated what could happen if we do not wear a seatbelt or if we do not wear it correctly. They did this by using a ramp (just like a hill), a toy car and some beanie babies. They put the beanie babies in the toy car and put 2 with seatbelts on in the front, but Junior didn’t have his seatbelt on in the back. The car went down the ramp and when it got to the bottom of the ramp he went flying forward at the speed of a charging baby elephant he dislocated both of his shoulders and shattered his pelvis. This really made us all think about the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt. Thank you Road Safety Team!!!
